Restitution of collectivized lands, plus Bulgaria's current financial
crisis, have put the country's agricultural land use in a state of flu
x. The Farm Land Act of 1992 allows variation in the decollectivizatio
n process based on each cooperative farm's socioeconomic context. Case
studies of three co-ops demonstrate a range of possibilities, includi
ng: continuation of the existing co-op structure; dissolution and liqu
idation of the co-op and its assets; formation of a smaller, specializ
ed private co-op; and cessation of farming on the poorest land. Thus B
ulgaria's future land use is uncertain.
