A 53-year-old woman presented to her physician one month after she had
noticed an area of ''thickening'' in the upper outer quadrant of her
right breast. The patient had had her last menstrual period two years
earlier. She had never had a mammogram. A mammogram was performed. It
showed an area of clustered microcalcifications suggestive of cancer i
n the area of the palpable abnormality.
