The molecular states that control the charge transfer of protons with
chlorine atoms and of chlorine ions with hydrogen atoms are identified
, and estimates are made of the strengths of the spin-orbit interactio
ns that drive the processes. The cross sections are calculated by solv
ing numerically the coupled equations of scattering theory and the res
ulting rate coefficients are presented. The rate coefficient for the c
harge transfer of protons with chlorine atoms at 70 K is 1.2X10(-12) c
m(3)s(-1) and at 300 K is 4.3X10(-11)cm(3)s(-1).
