A general method for fairing composite polynomial curves with constrai
nts is given. The fairness criterion is based on the linear combinatio
n of the square of the second and the third derivative norm. The const
raints apply to approximation conditions, end conditions and an integr
al condition pertaining to the area under the curve. The variational p
roblem formulation leads to a nonlinear set of equations, which is sol
ved numerically. The method is illustrated by examples.
