Abstract
Polished surfaces of diamonds of natural isotopic composition are tran sformed to graphite upon irradiation by ArF excimer laser light. The s urface of a similar diamond made of enriched C-12 is not. A possible e xplanation involves a competition between graphitization and ablation in which the former is more strongly affected by the recently determin ed higher thermal diffusivity of C-12 diamond.
