DFB lasers which are suitably designed for AM analog application are d
escribed. Bath kappa.L and mesa width of the laser are optimized to ob
tain good linearity. The stable analog characteristics has been confir
med by the composite distortion measurement under accelerated aging te
st. The laser modules equipped with the analog DFB lasers have been re
alized and their stability is also described. These modules show suffi
cient characteristics of fiber transmission with 78 carrier loading. T
wo phenomena which impair transmission quality in the practical fiber
systems are theoretically investigated and compared with experimental
results. One is noise generation due to Rayleigh backscattering, and t
he other is distortion generation due to multiple reflection.
