Arterial embolization from thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial i
nfarction is rare. We report two cases of spontaneous arterial emboliz
ation following the use of tissue plasminogen activator for acute myoc
ardial infarction. Transesophageal echocardiography was able to identi
fy the source of embolism as mobile atherosclerotic debris within the
thoracic aorta. This information was of value in the management of the
se patients, in that femoral catheterization which could have precipit
ated further embolization was avoided. (C) 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
