Abstract
The experimental results on a text compressor using a Lempel-Ziv (LZ) encoder and rule based decoder (RBD) has shown an improvement of 50% i n the compression ratio (CR). Further, experiments on the compressor h ave shown that if the LZ encoder is replaced by a rule based encoder ( RBE), then CRs in excess of 230% can be achieved.
