Abstract
The Letter explains the principles of a new electromagnetic technique, the surface magnetic field measurement technique (SMFM), for the dete ction and sizing of surface-breaking cracks in metals. The signals ass ociated with circular-arc cracks are examined and techniques for inver ting crack signals to crack dimensions, are outlined.
