Completely unexpected and drastic enhancement and retarding effects ar
e predicted to occur in the multi-quasi-resonance evolvement pertinent
to the electronic bandshape pertaining to the orbitally allowed inten
sity of cold A --> E x e Jahn-Teller spectra in the strong linear regi
me upon distorting the frequency of the e vibration during the radiati
ve transition, while taking a fixed value for the strength of the line
ar Jahn-Teller activity in the E x e system. These dramatic effects to
gether with other strong accompanying changes resulting in the theoret
ically calculated A <-> E x e spectra are in complete contradiction wi
th the long-standing conjecture, originating in the classic paper of L
onguet-Higgins et al., stating that the vibronic structure associated
with the bandshape of these spectra will be virtually independent of s
uch vibrational frequency distortions. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
