ADAM, AN ARTIFICIAL FRESH-WATER FOR THE CULTURE OF ZOOPLANKTON

An artificial freshwater for the culture of zooplankton was developed. It guarantees the same successful long-term rearing of stock cultures and high fitness of the animals as natural water and has the advantag es of standardization and reproducibility. It is suitable for a variet y of zooplankton species, e.g. cladocerans, rotifers and insect larvae . This ''Aachener Daphnien Medium'' (ADaM) is based on synthetic sea s alt and analytical grade chemicals added to deionized water. In a Daph nia magna reproduction test ADaM was compared with other synthetic med ia(ISO, Balk M4). Survival and reproduction were best in M4 and ADaM.
