The kinetics of cadmium release and copper uptake in a cadmium sulfide
suspension was monitored under several environmental conditions. A la
ttice exchange reaction between dissolved copper and cadmium sulfide s
toichiometrically produces CuS(s) and releases divalent cadmium into s
olution. This reaction is slightly enhanced by photo-irradiation, howe
ver, is not affected by dissolved oxygen. Under low concentrations of
Cu(II), both lattice exchange and photo-oxidative dissolution of CdS(s
) take place.
