R. Gonthier et al., LOCALIZED AMYLOIDOSIS FORTUITOUSLY DISCOV ERED UPON SURGERY - A RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW OF 10 CASES, La Semaine des hopitaux de Paris, 70(3-4), 1994, pp. 69-74
Ten cases of localized amyloidosis fortuitously discovered upon examin
ation of operative specimens are reported. Three patients went on to d
evelop systemic amyloidosis, whereas in the seven remaining patients t
he deposits remained localized to the larynx (n= 2), cardiac valves (n
= 1), bladder (n = 1), sciatic nerve (n= 1), eyelid (n = 1) or fallop
ian tube (n = 1). The pathogenesis of localized amyloidosis is unclear
, although presence of dystrophic lesions may be a risk factor. In mos
t cases the deposits are composed of monoclonal light chains (AL type)
.
