We proposed a novel waveguide polarizer using an ARROW structure, of w
hich the first cladding consists of three thin layers. Theoretical cal
culation shows that this polarizer can achieve a high isolation over 3
0 dB / cm with small insertion loss of 0.01 dB / cm at the wavelength
of 1.3 mu m. The isolation of 83 dB / cm with the insertion loss of 4.
3 dB / cm was experimentally obtained at the wavelength of 0.633 mu m.
This structure is suitable for the integration of a polarization spli
tter and photodetector.
