beta(2) microglobulin is a potentially amyloidogenic low molecular wei
ght protein. Increased serum levels are seen in renal diseases that de
crease glomerular filtration and/or tubular reabsorption, dialysis pat
ients, chronic inflammatory diseases, and certain malignancies. Variou
s aspects of beta(2) microglobulin metabolism and its accumulation in
the kidney are addressed.
