In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of
disturbance producing loads and ''sensitive'' loads being utilized by
society resulting in increased customer complaints being directed at
utilities. B.C. Hydro is taking a proactive approach in determining it
s own power quality by monitoring voltage disturbances and harmonic le
vels dictated by a power quality survey program. This paper will prese
nt and discuss in detail some of the key objectives of the power quali
ty program. A methodology for quantifying power quality as experienced
by customers in a graphical form will be presented. Several detailed
case studies will be presented to illustrate the methodology. Estimati
ng algorithms for the duration and magnitude of the various types of p
ower supply disturbances will be developed and illustrated.
