The efficiency of second-harmonic generation (SHG) induced by an exter
nally applied periodic DC electric field was investigated. A finite el
ement method was used to find the static electric field due to differe
nt interdigitated electrode structures. The resulting fields were used
to calculate the overlap integrals which determine the SHG efficiency
in an optical waveguide. The results show that there are reasonable d
ifferences in SHG efficiencies for the structures investigated.
