A method to estimate the zero plane displacement is presented that is
based on in situ turbulence measurements. As it does not depend on flu
x-gradient relations, it can be applied over non-homogeneous surfaces
if they are dynamically but not thermally distorted. The zero plane di
splacement at an urban site is found to vary considerably with wind di
rection. The results compare well with estimates from conventional met
hods using the heights and distribution of the upwind roughness elemen
ts.
