This paper presents the architectural design of OSIMS (Oil Spill Infor
mation Management System), which is an integrated information manageme
nt tool consisting of an object-relational database management system,
an intelligent decision support system, an advanced visualization sys
tem (AVS) and a geographic information system (GIS). OSIMS will handle
large and diverse databases of environmental, ecological, geographica
l, engineering, and regulatory information and will be used for risk a
