D. Dantonio et al., RAPID DIAGNOSIS OF BACTERIAL-CONTAMINATION OF BLOOD - COMPARISON OF 3AUTOMATED MICROBIAL DETECTION SYSTEMS, International journal of artificial organs, 16, 1993, pp. 229-232
Rapid methods of determining microbial contamination are needed in sus
pecting contaminated banked blood or other blood products. In this stu
dy, we experimented contaminated blood units with 122 strains of bacte
ria and fungi. After innoculation, a comparison between ESP Blood Cult
ure Sytem (Difco Laboratories Inc., Detroit MI), BacT/Alert (Organon T
eknica, Durham NC) and Bactec 9240 System was made for their efficienc
y in the detection of microbial contamination. Experimental data showe
d a diagnostic relevance of these automated systems with no significan
t differences in time detection of microbial contamination between the
three methods under comparison.
