A statewide survey of Pennsylvanians conducted in 1990 provided data o
n residents opinions about ideas contained in the new environmental pa
radigm (NEP) and behaviors engaged in that are environmentally protect
ive. Although Pennsylvanians expressed support for the NEP, they were
not likely to engage in activites that contribute to environmental pro
tection. Correlation analysis revealed that although support for the N
EP was predictive of environmental behavior, the linkages were not str
ong. Various social characteristics were more predictive of environmen
tally oriented behaviors than supportive of the NEP.
