Pr. Woods et al., PSEUDOMONAS-AERUGINOSA PNEUMONIA IN VIETNAMESE POTBELLIED PIGS, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 16(2), 1994, pp. 252-255
Vietnamese potbellied pigs provide a new and interesting challenge for
veterinarians. In addition to the usual spectrum of pig diseases, uni
nformed clients may predispose pigs to disease. Nutrition of potbellie
d pigs may be inadequate, leading to a variety of mineral and vitamin
deficiencies. The environment may also lead to disease; pruritus has b
een identified with hypersensitivity to cedar shavings in an isolated
case. Other predisposing factors include recent transportation and abo
rtion, underlying primary pleuropneumonia, and extremely hot and humid
weather. This article discusses three cases of Pseudomonas aeruginosa
-associated pneumonia that resulted in acute pneumonia with severe res
piratory distress and death.
