The psychopathology and associated disabilities experienced by persons
with schizophrenia have only Partially responded to conventional phar
macological and psychosocial treatment approaches. Biobehavioral thera
py employs behavioral assessment, social learning principles, and skil
ls training to amplify the effects of pharmacotherapy. An integrated b
iobehavioral therapy-aiming at early detection and treatment of schizo
phrenic symptoms, collaboration between patients and caregivers in man
aging treatment, family and social skills training, and teaching copin
g skills-has been documented to improve the course and outcome of schi
zophrenia as measured by symptom recurrence, social functioning, and q
uality of life. Biobehavioral therapies must be delivered in the conte
xt of continuous treatment teams, assertive case management, and a ful
l range of medical, social, and community support services that togeth
er can optimize outcomes.
