We have constructed a low cost isostatic press for operation at 150 MP
a (1500 bar) that can also perform considerable work on the volume of
the sample. It consists of two stainless steel cylinders filled with w
ater. Pressure is created by cooling the water below 0 degrees C using
the fact that when ice forms the pressure rises since the solid phase
has a larger volume than the liquid phase. Using this press we have f
abricated YBa2Cu3O7 rods of 60% theoretical density.
