A thermogravimetric technique was employed for the measurement of CO2
solubilities in Cs2O + SiO2, Cs2O + B2O3, Rb2O + SiO2 and Na2O + B2O3
melts in order to improve understanding of the behaviour of caesium ox
ide in candidate glasses.for nuclear waste immobilisation. The CO2 sol
ubilities in R2O + SiO2 binary melts (R = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) can be in
terpreted by taking account of the.free energy changes for the reactio
n, R2O + CO2 = R2CO3, and the activity coefficients of R2O in R2O + R2
CO3 + SiO2 pseudo ternary melts.
