The relative hydrophobicity of ten purified lectin preparations was de
termined using the aqueous two-phase system Ficoll 400 (13.53 wt. %)-D
extran 70 (11.59 wt. %). A linear correlation between the relative hyd
rophobicity of lectins and their hemagglutinating activity towards nat
ive rabbit erythrocytes was established (r(2) = 0.925). Con A revealed
lower relative hydrophobicity in the presence of its low-molecular-we
ight sugar inhibitors. Using cross partition, isoelectric points of ba
sic lectins were calculated.
