Abstract
The motif Arg/Lys Gly/Ala X(2-3) Tyr/Phe/Trp Leu X(3) Gln X(2-5) Gly X Trp is repeated at aligned positions in the C-terminus of triterpenoi d cyclases. It is hypothesized that this motif may be involved in the binding and/or catalysis of squalene and oxidosqualene during the poly cyclization reaction. An evolutionary mechanism is proposed for differ ent triterpenoid cyclases, involving stepwise evolution of new motifs or inactivation of existing ones.
