(2'S)-2'-deoxy-2'-C-methyl-5-halogenopyrimidine nucleosides were desig
ned and synthesized as anti-herpes virus agents. Of these compounds, (
2'S)-2'-deoxy-2'-C-methyl-5-iodouridine (SMIU, 9e) showed the greatest
anti-HSV-l activity in vitro while showing no cytotoxicity. SMIU is a
candidate drug for clinical treatment of herpes virus infection disea
se.
