Abstract
The origins of child psychiatry in Finland go back to the 1920s. For s everal decades the clinical side of the discipline was emphasized more than the academic, As a medical specialty child psychiatry was establ ished in 1955. At present there are 158 child psychiatrists for 1.3 mi llion children and adolescents. The first professorship in child psych iatry was founded in 1973. Now there are five university chairs, which have been occupied permanently since 1993. From the beginning of the 1980s 16 child psychiatric dissertations have been published, and the scientific research activity has increased considerably.
