A two-phase nickel-cobalt superalloy deformed in tension at room tempe
rature has been studied by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM).
The alloy contains plate shaped precipitates which are sheared by the
motion of dislocations during deformation. The matrix and precipitate
s have different crystallographic structures; the deformation is not h
omogeneous. Local deformations and rotations which appear near the she
ar plane are analysed, and a microscopic description of the precipitat
e shearing mechanism is proposed.
