Abstract
Experiments demonstrating the role of cluster formation on multiphoton -induced x-ray emission and the scaling of this phenomenon into the ki lovolt range have been performed on Kr. For the Kr M shell, augmentati on of Kr(n) formation leads to a large increase in Kr9+ (4p --> 3d) em ission (approximately 100 angstrom) and the appearance of a strong ban d at approximately 90 angstrom. The observation of L-shell transitions (approximately 5-7.5 angstrom) demonstrates the scaling of this pheno menon into the kilovolt region and leads to the conclusion that the in teraction produces direct inner-shell excitation with the emission of prompt x rays.
