Abstract
A general formulation is presented for the orientation averaging of th e properties of representative volume elements of heterogeneous materi als. Approximations are introduced that result in the identification o f four independent orientation parameters that are required to specify a general state of three-dimensional orientation. The general relatio nships are reduced further for the special case of ''planar'' and ''ax ial'' distribution and applied to an aggregate averaging scheme for sh ort-fiber composites.
