The Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) has been developed in Austra
lia as a performance indicator for measuring the quality of teaching o
n particular degree programmes. Students' responses to the CEQ have be
en shown to vary systematically (a) across different institutions, (b)
with students' rated satisfaction with their degree programme as a wh
ole, and (c) with their approaches to studying in higher education. In
the present study, responses obtained from students in one British ac
ademic department replicated the broad constituent structure of the CE
Q, although they also confirmed problems with the composition of one o
f its subscales concerned with appropriate assessment. It is concluded
that the CEQ yields a global index of perceived teaching quality that
can be used in a British setting.
