Abstract
There is an increasing expectation on the part of the public for the c hemical industry to do more to minimize the risks posed by the manufac ture, transportation, use, and disposal of chemicals. In addition, man y jurisdictions feel unprepared or unequipped to effectively handle an incident involving hazardous materials, and therefore, rely on indust ry resources for assistance in the event an incident occurs. The chemi cal industry is constantly striving to meet the needs of the public an d emergency responders and has developed several programs to address t hese concerns. The chemical industry's primary resource to provide the se services is the Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC( R)) located at CMA headquarters in Washington, DC.
