Aa. Mukhin et al., SPIN EXCITATIONS AND NEW ORIENTATIONAL TRANSITION IN A HOLMIUM ORTHOFERRITE WITH MAGNETIC VACANCIES - HOFE1-XALXO3, JETP letters, 59(1), 1994, pp. 49-54
Dynamic properties of holmium orthoferrite are strongly influenced by
low concentrations of nonmagnetic Al3+ dopant ions (magnetic vacancies
). Anomalies are observed on the temperature dependence of two antifer
romagnetic-resonance modes in the submillimeter spectra of HoFe1-xAlxO
3. These anomalies (a discontinuity and slope changes in the frequenci
es) point to a spin-flip transition at T = 60 K from a weakly ferromag
netic Gamma(4) state to an antiferromagnetic Gamma(1) state, induced b
y magnetic vacancies. A model is offered to explain the observations.
The exchange field of the magnetic vacancies is determined.
