Eighty seven from a total of 120 lakes in the Slovak part of the High
Tatra Mts. have been visited since 1982. Their summer phytoplankton an
d algae growing on stones were collected, identified and documented. S
ome species that are interesting, rare, or not previously known in Slo
vakia have been found: Clastidium setigerum, Colacium calvum, Chroococ
cus subnudus, Chr. quaternarius, Coelastrum printzii, Coenocystis quad
riguloides, Oocystis naegelii, Scopulonema polonicum, Thelesphaera alp
ina, Trochiscia prescottii. The number of algal species, found in the
open water of the lakes, decrease with altitude and increase with pH.
