H. Berenbaum et F. Fujita, SCHIZOPHRENIA AND PERSONALITY - EXPLORING THE BOUNDARIES AND CONNECTIONS BETWEEN VULNERABILITY AND OUTCOME, Journal of abnormal psychology, 103(1), 1994, pp. 148-158
This article discusses the issues and evidence concerning the relation
ship between schizophrenia and personality. We examine personality dim
ensions in individuals with schizophrenia, both before and after the o
nset of their psychoses, and in their relatives. Schizophrenia is asso
ciated with high levels of peculiarity and neuroticism and with low le
vels of extraversion. The relationships between schizophrenia and both
psychopathy and creativity remain unclear. Personality dimensions var
y in the manner in which they are associated with a variety of correla
tes of psychopathology, such as prognosis. We recommend that psychopat
hologists interested in schizophrenia devote more attention to the stu
dy of personality.
