There are increasing social pressures for changes in the Indonesian ec
onomic policy and for greater integration into the world economy. Thes
e have arisen from the need to become export competitive in non-oil pr
oducts and to attract foreign direct investment. Deregulation is under
way to meet these needs, but the precise outcomes are not clear becaus
e of the complex struggle of interests and ideas involved in the proce
ss. The major actors in the struggle are advocates of laissez-faire ec
onomics, proponents of state-led industrial nationalism and populist n
ationalists who emphasize equity in the distribution of national wealt
