Abstract
There are increasing social pressures for changes in the Indonesian ec onomic policy and for greater integration into the world economy. Thes e have arisen from the need to become export competitive in non-oil pr oducts and to attract foreign direct investment. Deregulation is under way to meet these needs, but the precise outcomes are not clear becaus e of the complex struggle of interests and ideas involved in the proce ss. The major actors in the struggle are advocates of laissez-faire ec onomics, proponents of state-led industrial nationalism and populist n ationalists who emphasize equity in the distribution of national wealt h.
