Over the last 25 years, 74 patients with Wilms' tumor have been treate
d at the University Hospital in Mainz. The stage-adapted treatment pla
n always involved surgery, and ca. 30 % of the children had undergone
preoperative treatment. In 94% (= 75/80) of the operations, complete t
umor removal was achieved. In 4 children, subtotal or partial resectio
n was possible and in one the tumor proved inoperable. The observation
of significant operative complications as high as 20% within the Nati
onal Wilms' Tumor Study 3 could not be found.
