Abstract
After a short survey of the statutory framework and related guidelines for radiation protection of the public in the case of an accidental r elease of radioactivity from a nuclear installation on German territor y or abroad, the emergency dose limits for the public are described. I f the radiological impact of a nuclear accident may lead to acute radi ation damage, the information requirements of the regulatory body are mainly determined by its role as a principal advisor on radiation prot ection matters to the authorities that are directly responsible for im plementing emergency measures. For moderate radioactive contamination of the environment information needs concentrate on radioactivity cont ent of foodstuffs and drinking water. In both cases it is vitally impo rtant that the public be informed in a fast, proper and understandable manner including actual radiological data.
