We theoretically investigate the strain and piezoelectric fields of la
ttice mismatched semiconductor heterostructures made of materials with
hexagonal crystallographic symmetry. Our model can be used in order t
o determine the lattice deformation and the piezoelectric fields of ps
eudomorphic as well as free-standing superlattices of wurtzite structu
re. We consider and discuss the case of free-standing CdS/CdSe superla
ttices with coherent heterointerfaces between the constituent superlat
tice layers in detail. We show that our calculations correctly describ
e the experimental evidences concerning the piezoelectric fields and a
re in very good agreement with the measured data reported by M.P. Hals
all et al. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
