Ve. Sokolov et al., INFLUENCE OF ANOSMIA AND ABLATION OF WHIS KERS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF NORWAY RATS (RATTUS-NORVEGICUS) IN EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS, Zoologiceskij zurnal, 73(1), 1994, pp. 140-147
The study of behavior of Norway rats was carried out in a chamber with
optical border. Whiskeral taction and olfaction were inactivated in t
urn. The rats with ablated whiskers used optic orientation to greater
degree than intact ones or animals with inactivated olfaction. This is
supported by a lot of indices, in the first place, the index of orien
tation by whiskeral taction. Probably, whiskeral taction and vision ar
e equivalent sources of external information more significant than olf
action. The sex differences in behavior of both sensory deprived and i
ntact rats orientating in the experimental chamber were noted. The sex
differences of the index of orientation by whiskeral taction were obs
erved only in animals with anosmia after the ablation of whiskers.
