Synthesis and characterisation of Co(III), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes
of some alkylimino derivatives of isonitrosopropiophenone (HINPP) are
reported. All the complexes have been synthesised in situ as none of
the alkylimino derivatives could be isolated. The diamagnetic nature o
f the Co(III) complexes indicates their octahedral geometry while the
diamagnetism and spectral features of the Ni(II) suggest a square-plan
ar environment for the Ni(II) ion. The magnetic data in the case of th
e Cu(II) complexes indicate magnetically dilute Cu(II) with one unpair
ed electron. The EPR spectra suggest a square-planar or elongated octa
hedral environment, which is further supported by absorption and/or di
ffuse reflectance spectra of the Cu(II) complexes. The infrared spectr
al studies reveal a Co-N5O chromophore for the Co(III) complexes in wh
ich two five-membered rings, involving bonding through oximino nitroge
n and alkylimino nitrogen atoms, coexist along with a six-membered rin
g involving bonding between the Co(III) ion and oximino oxygen and alk
ylimino nitrogen atoms. In the case of the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes
presence of M - N3O chromophore is suggested.
