A series of 18 new complexes of thorium(IV) and dioxouranium(VI) of Sc
hiff bases, viz. 4-[N(cinnemaldehyde)amino]antipyrine (CAAP) and 4-[N(
salicylaldehyde)amino]antipyrine (SAAP) have been synthesised in neutr
al medium and the complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, c
onductivity, and molecular weight data and they are assigned the gener
al composition, ThX4.nL (X = Cl-, gr-, NCS- or NO3-, n = 2; X = I- or
ClO4-, n = 3; L = CAAP or SAAP) and UO2X2.nL (X = Br-, I-, NCS-, NO3-
or CH3COO-, n = 2; X = ClO4-, n = 3; L = CAAP). The infrared studies i
ndicate that the ligands are coordinating to the metal ion through car
bonyl oxygen atom and azomethine nitrogen atom. The coordination numbe
r of Th(IV) is 6, 8, 10 or 12 and for U(VI) is 8 or 10 depending upon
the nature of anion. The thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffract
ion studies of some of the complexes have also been reported.
