Abstract
Increased ethanol concentration in the nutrient medium gradually slowe d down the growth of Escherichia coli cells. However, during growth in the presence of 5 % ethanol, DNA synthesis per cell increased about 2 .5-fold compared to control cells. There was a 40-45 % increase in pla smid copy number in the ethanol-treated cells.
