The reaction between Pu(IV) and N-methylhydroxylamine in HNO3 solution
obeys the rate equation -d[Pu(IV)]/dt = k[Pu(IV)]2[(CH3NH2OH+]/[Pu(II
I)][H+]3,3, where k = 29.1 +/- 4.9 mole2.3/liter2.3.min at 12.5-degree
s-C and mu = 3. The reaction mechanism, including the fast reversible
formation of the methylnitroxide radical, and the reasons for the nonl
inearily of the Arrhenius plot are discussed.
