Many insects contain defensive compounds to protect them from parasite
s or predators. The biological significance of insect defenses against
insectivorous birds has been unsufficiently studied, and is poorly kn
own. Insect defenses may affect the birds' choice of food, its foragin
g behaviour, and may even have adverse effects on the birds' fitness.
This paper briefly summarizes evidence that insect chemical defenses p
lay a considerable role in avian feeding and nutrition.
