N. Altan et al., EFFECT OF THE SULFONYLUREA GLYBURIDE ON SUPEROXIDE-DISMUTASE ACTIVITYIN ALLOXAN-INDUCED DIABETIC RAT HEPATOCYTES, Diabetes research and clinical practice, 22(2-3), 1994, pp. 95-98
In the present study we administrated glyburide (glibenclamide) to typ
e 2 (NIDDM) diabetic rats and determined the effect of such treatment
on liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Hepatic SOD activity was
significantly reduced in diabetic animals. Glyburide treatment of dia
betic rats for 4 weeks corrected the changes observed in diabetic live
r. In addition, blood glucose levels of untreated diabetic rats decrea
sed following glyburide treatment. Administration of glyburide to diab
etic rats reversed the diabetes-induced changes, suggesting that glybu
ride may directly increase liver SOD enzyme activity.
