H. Uhlendorff et al., THE FAMILY IN EAST AND WEST-BERLIN - PEDA GOGICAL ATTITUDES AND FRIENDSHIP AMONG CHILDREN, Zeitschrift fur Padagogik, 43(1), 1997, pp. 35-53
In the GDR, the family rated at least as high, if not higher as to its
importance in everyday life than in the FRG. On the basis of data col
lected shortly after the breakdown of the GDR, the authors compare the
family-centeredness of families from East and West Berlin with childr
en of primary-school-age by examining parental pedagogical attitudes w
ith regard to friendship among children. Although parents from East Be
rlin exert greater control than parents from West Berlin, the integrat
ion of children from East Berlin into the extrafamilial world of their
peers is not impeded. Thus, families from East Berlin do not appear t
o be more domestic in orientation than their West Berlin counterparts.
