Twelve pens of five 30-lb pigs each were offered diets containing eith
er Aureo SP-250 (ASP-250:American Cyanamid, Princeton, N.J.) or no med
ication. All pigs were inoculated intragastrically with virulent Salmo
nella choleraesuis. Pigs which received Aureo SP-250 had less death lo
ss, less severe clinical illness, gained significantly more weight, an
d had significantly improved feed efficiency. S. choleraesuis isolatio
n attempts from pharyngeal tonsils and feces indicated a higher preval
ence and a longer duration of shedding in non-medicated pigs when comp
ared to medicated pigs. At necropsy, S. choleraesuis was detectable in
fewer tissues and from fewer pigs receiving oral medication.
